Helga George is a freelance writer and scientist living in southern California. She has a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., with minors in Biochemistry and Microbiology. Her Masters in Plant Pathology was obtained from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA. She received a B.S. in Agriculture with a specialization in Plant Science from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

Her current research is in plant biochemistry studying the metabolism of phenolic compounds in fruit. She has been in a general biology department and attends seminars on a broad array of biological topics. Helga's research interests involve the study of plant secondary compounds, plant defense, plant-microbe and plant-insect interactions, and plant and fungal toxins.

Her professional writing has been either research papers in peer-reviewed journals or over 275 web articles explaining scientific topics to laymen, along with a number of horticultural articles. In contrast, her general interests encompass a wide range of fields, ranging from trying to keep up with political events to refunding. When not writing or performing research, she indulges her passion of growing rare tropical plants and establishing xeric (drought-resistant) gardens.
